Gardens Homestay

Make your stay in Wellington a memorable experience! Join us at our Wellington B&B, the Gardens Homestay. Our B&B is in a large Victorian residence that was built in 1892 then lovingly restored and developed during the 1990’s. The richly ornamented façade features stained glass, cast iron lacework, bay windows and wooden fretwork in a delightful display. Our high ceilings and colonial antiques compliment the Victorian character of this wonderful residence, built for a Member of Parliament in the 1890’s. Gardens Homestay is Wellington’s most elegant B&B!

Your hosts are Fly by Wire Ride inventor Neil Harrap and his wife Sally Guinness. At Gardens Homestay we have only one suite and book around forty guest stays a year so every guest visit is a special occasion for us. Enjoy the quiet comfort of our spacious two bedroom suite with its veranda overlooking the harbour. Free guest wireless internet or use one of our laptops.

We’re located in historic Thorndon, the closest B&B to Parliament, Lambton Quay and downtown Wellington’s shopping and business centre. It’s just two minutes walk to the Botanic Gardens and the Lady Norwood Rose Garden, even closer to numerous cafes, restaurants and specialty shops in the historic Tinakori Road shopping district. All of Wellington’s attractions are within walking distance and we suggest using our ‘Wellington Walk’ guide and central city map to quickly find the points of interest.

St Mary Street is shown on the original 1840 plan of Wellington. Nearly all of the houses and buildings are carefully restored or faithful replicas of the colonial era. The neighbourhood contains a wealth of historic homes, including the New Zealand Prime Ministers residence which is nearby. At the top end of St Mary Street is the Town Belt forest with spectacular views from the trails. Bird-watchers will also enjoy both the Botanic Gardens and the Zealandia sanctuary for their prolific bird-life: www.visitzealandia.com
